Hey y’all! It’s been a minute since I’ve been able to write much of anything other than a social media update. As the weather warms, I find myself outside more, playing catch up with all the tasks undone and deadlines unmet, and the weather has been hit or miss so I seem to always be chasing the Sun. Additionally, our household has been dealing with a family emergency for the past week. It seems life doesn’t stop so we can pursue our dreams relentlessly. *sigh* What gives?!

Mercury is in Retrograde. That’s what. Say what? What are you talking about, Morgan? I’m glad you asked! Mercury’s retrograde is characterized by an apparent shift in the orbit of Mercury. Although it is an optical illusion, the planet seems to turn back and reverse it’s orbit. Astrologically, this period of time is known to cause chaos, financial and emotional upheaval, and general unrest. You may have heard friends recently blaming Mercury retrograde for their unfortunate circumstances, failures or bad luck. While this is not always the case, aficionados of Astrology tend to view this as a period of reflection, where decisions shouldn’t be made hastily and slow progress is certain.

Mercury returned to direct orbit April 15 after being retrograde since March 22. Mercury isn’t the only planet to do this. All the planets exhibit apparent retrograde in some form, Mercury just happens to be notorious for wreaking havoc. Saturn, for instance, will be retrograde April 17 through September 6, 2018.

You may see Astrology and astrological influence as a lot of hocus-pocus, mumbo-jumbo, gobbledy-goop but, I beg to differ. In fact, Astrology brings meaning to the influence of the Universe in even the most mundane of tasks throughout history. If you farm, you’ve probably consulted your almanac, more times than you have fingers and toes, to decipher the best days to plant or harvest. Maybe read your horoscope before making a decision hoping to procure an answer to a burning question. Whether it’s work or whimsy, at some point, you’ve likely looked for answers or just searched for meaning in coincidental happenings in the alignment of the Sun, Moon, planets or stars.

Astrology attempts to show or explain the influence of astronomical happenings on our lives. Not to be confused with Astronomy, the study of the universe and the position of its celestial bodies, both Astrology and Astronomy have very common roots. In fact, Astrology antedates all of recorded history. Humans have looked toward the stars for centuries searching for meaning in the heavens. Deriving meaning from the unknown or meaningful symbolism is the basis for many of the world’s religions.

Now, I’m not saying you should strip down naked and dance under the Full Moon (or maybe you should)…but I’m also not saying that turning an open mind toward the pull of the cosmos is an act in futility. If things are feeling a little “off” lately, the cards aren’t falling your way or your decision making skills are wavering, just blame it on menacing Mercury. Don’t forget, even though Mercury has turned direct, it will retrograde again July 26 through August 18 and October 31 through November 20. Until then, rest easy knowing that the planets are realigned and that, sometimes, life just happens.

Peace, Love and Cheesecake!
